Description

This textiles item is heritage inspired quilt. The quilt is a box design comprising of nine blocks. The corner blocks of each are triangle patchwork. The centre blocks are hand embroidered and depict childhood memories, one being a Christmas tree with beaded ornaments, presents and a string of lights created using a backstitch. Another square is a clothesline with applique hills and embroidered tree branches created using satin stitch, backstitch and the french knot stitch. Appliquéd hills and an embroidered fenced vegetable patch is the next one, created using backstitch, satin stitch, french knot stitch, bullion stitch, lazy daisy stitch and weave stitch. The last square depicts a farmyard scene, with a duck pond and trees, created using french knot stitch, satin stitch and back stitch. The centre block square is focal point and illustrates my childhood home. Raw edge machine embroidered hillscape of varying greens and a foreground of free motion swirls and hand embroidered flowers created using the button hole stitch and the french knot stitch. A needle turned house with raw edge details include the windows door and steps, as well as embroidered french knot bushes either side of the steps. The four remaining blocks are four block squares two being star patchwork and the other being tulip appliqué, in a diagonal line across the quilt. The tulips are raw edge machine embroidered applique, with a machine satin stitch stem. The star patchwork has eight triangular points and a square centre. The same fabric has been used throughout the nine block squares, being geometric, floral and plain fabric. Colours are dominated in red, green, orange and pink colour scheme. Surrounding the nine block squares is the first boarder using a brown fabric. The second boarder is machine embroidered with family names, the fabric used is light cream with metallic cream embroidery. The third boarder fabric is a mix between teal, green and deep blues. The binding on the quilt is the same fabric as the backing. On the back of the quilt there are visible stitches due to stitching in the ditch to secure quilt together and highlight the boarders. The binding has been machine stitched on one side, then folded over and hand stitched using a slip stitch on the front side.
