The textile item is inspired by the immense use of florals created from various textile medians and designed as a statement piece, worn for extravagant events and ceremonies. The techniques of chenille, beading, sequinning, dyeing, fabric manipulation, embroidery (machine and hand), applique, and crochet is seen across the design, placing an emphasis on couching which weaves through the train of orchids. Additionally, laser cut symmetrical flowers are seen across the bust of the design, ensuring the flowers follow a harmonious and monochromatic colour scheme of various pinks, oranges, and purples. The application of vintage lace is applied primarily through the corseted lace bodice and throughout the orchid train. Singapore’s national flower – the orchid – is the primary inspiration of the design. The orchids embody Singapore’s nature through the vibrant colours and patterns created using decorative techniques. The use of pink has been used on a symbolic level to convey the themes of love, beauty, and new life. The orchids are translated into both the corseted top and skirt. Nicky Zimmermann’s designs, specifically, her 2022 resort collection titled ‘the postcard’ has influenced the functional aspects of this design.
