Description

The textile item, Jewelled, consisting of a structured corset, and a long, flowing skirt, juxtaposed with an overlay of extravagant flamenco ruffles. The costume has carefully drawn inspiration from the work of fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, Wicked’ the Musical, and the Jewel Beetle. The historical inspiration of Oscar de La Renta’s ‘Spring 1992’ collection, celebrating the dramatic feminine form through voluminous flamenco ruffles with a cinched waist, has inspired the full skirt overlay contrasted with a structured corset. Contemporarily, the design emulated the costumes of ‘Wicked the Musical’, drawing inspiration from the sculptural embellishments, whereby the student implemented a wet-felted sculptural element to further dramatize the costume. Finally, the Jewel Beetle has heavily influenced the colour palette, specifically the glossy iridescence of the beetle and its varying green hues, which has been reflected through the textures and embellishments of the costume.
