The textile item is an elegant ball gown apparel item featuring a boned bodice and a two-tiered skirt with multiple layers of contrasting fabrics which will be covered in techniques showcasing the Hawaiian Islands native flora in the style of Australian artist Libby Watkins. The strapless gown has drawn inspiration from Dior’s Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2017 Collection. Further inspiration has been drawn from the natural landscape of the Hawaiian Islands, specifically the Loulu palms. It is highly expressive and decorative, designed to specifically present the Hawaiian and Polynesian culture of Moana, evidently seen in the incorporation of palm trees and hibiscus flowers, drawing from natural sources of the islands. The fusion of contrasting fabrics of cotton canvas, and organza, along with various silks, draws viewers’ attention to the fine details and purpose behind this design. The textile item is to be worn at a premiere event, that visually engages and excites viewers. The strapless extravagant design of this gown is heavily inspired by the glamorous evening gowns of the 1950s where the strapless bell-silhouette was prevalent as were the two-tiered skirts which were commonly seen during the events of this era. This bell-silhouette accentuates the waist while emphasising the skirt and a feminine hourglass figure through an abundance of fabrics and layering creating volume which contrasts from the cinching boned bodice and corded waistline.
