My project is a formal dress inspired by the themes of nature and fantasy. Influenced by the classical style of Disney Princess dresses and the dominance and power of the natural world, my dress provides a modern twist to these traditional concepts. The motivations behind this product were to create a garment that made the wearer feel ethereal and empowered. Through its use of soft colours and floral motifs, the dress accomplishes its goal, taking on a fantastical and unreal aesthetic. Through the process of making my dress, I have not only built on my skills but learned important lessons, such as the importance of properly managing my time and setting personal goals. By doing so, I was not only better able to visualise my end product but also ensured I made a dress that was high in quality and achieved the desired goal and purpose. While making the dress, I went through many ups and downs, as with any project, however, they all helped me grow. My most enjoyable experience was in the decorative work. I found a sense of inner peace whilst hand embroidering the various floral elements along the bodice, and crocheting vines and flowers to hand from the waistline. This was a meaningful experience, as it is not only something I enjoy, but it was an opportunity to learn new and more complex stitches. It was also my first time micro-crocheting, and therefore, the product is of great value to me. The most challenging part of this journey was creating the back. As I was working with two difficult fabrics, lace and organza, I had to take great caution and precision in construction to ensure the product was of good quality. Looking into my dress, I have many aesthetic and functional components. The key aesthetic features are the hand embroidery and crochet along the bodice and waistline, capturing the theme of nature and adding to the elegance of the dress. Functional features of the dress include the invisible zipper and shank closure that provide an easy way in and out of the garment, whilst maintaining its formal nature. Furthermore, the princess seams along the bodice provide structure and a more definite and feminine shape to the garment. Overall, making this garment has been a truly unique and exhilarating experience that allowed me to express my passion and interests meaningfully.
