My motivation was to create something fresh and original that no one else from school had ever made. My project addresses many techniques using a diverse range of fibres, creating a decorative and artistic Coral Bleaching Textile Art Tapestry. The aesthetic look is reflected through the design inspirations and creative techniques used by the contemporary textile artist, Vanessa Barragão. Using a variety of techniques, compromising of knitting, crocheting, weaving and tie-dyeing were showcased to illustrate the Great Barrier Reef's profound effects in several layers. From the very beginning, I have now acquired a skill that will last a lifetime. With some guidance, I learned the fundamentals of crocheting, like how to crochet a chain stitch, a granny circle and a curly cue, just to mention a few. The wall hanging in my final creative design included more than thirty various kinds of stitches and techniques. I wanted to build a project that would allow me to explore different creative techniques drawing inspiration from the coral reef and incorporating it into my design in many creative ways. Finding yarn with a variety of textures and colours that would result in a beautiful visual representation of ocean coral was a fun part of this project. Learning to crochet and make three-dimensional (3D) objects with various-sized hooks gives the design a uniform appearance was another fun experience. Additionally, I acquired the skill of weaving with diverse yarns and crochet hooks utilising a range of colours, textures, and thicknesses. Additionally, tie-dyeing was used to provide a variety of blue hues for the intended ocean floor effects. The hardest parts of this project were learning to knit, crochet a new stitch, attach the sea urchin with wire to give it shape and attach the tiny crochet cords to the woven wall hanging. The wall-hanging woven tapestry allows viewers to observe the two-dimensional (2D) textile art that serves as the practical component of this major textiles project. The warp and weft strings of the woven design are held in place by a natural driftwood rod at the top of the wall hanging. Incorporating crocheting, weaving, knitting, and tie-dyeing to depict a serene, spiritual, and peaceful ambience, the white and blue tones ultimately tell the story of the Great Barrier Reef's substantial degradation. My final design's visual component was to illustrate the effects of coral bleaching from both a strong and a weak perspective. The colour palette of neutral shades combined with various artistic approaches showcases this wall hanging, inspired by varied oceanic blue hues. The colours in my final design illustrate the gradual effects of coral bleaching, representing the significant destruction of the Great Barrier Reef overall.
