Through elements and principles of design, I was able to achieve the focus area of 'Textiles Art' in my MTP. The focus area textiles art is defined as a highly decorative item that is more aesthetic then functional. My MTP, “Window to Haven” is a decorative, unique wall hanging that is quilted using an innovative and creative design. This focus area allowed me to create a strong connection to my inspiration of the Australian beach and Hamptons style homes. Looking through a 12 square attic window out onto an Australian beach was created from an image of my favourite holiday destination in NSW ‘North Haven’. North Haven is a popular holiday destination with holiday homes, guest houses and camping parks that cater for many visitors who come to enjoy the nearby beaches at all times of the year. Through this inspiration I was able to use a diverse range of colours, shapes, and images of the landscape that’s right on my home front. Furthermore, through the incorporation of various creative and decorative techniques common to textiles art, such as applique, patchwork, hand, and machine embroidery; the desired end use of a unified image reflecting my understanding of the East Coast of Australia was created to be hung in a bedroom or family room to create an atmosphere to the room and create a sense of happiness and peace to reflect my unique and creative style. Overall, the completion of this Textiles and Design major work was challenging as I was put to the challenge of doing it through distance education as my mainstream school couldn’t run the course face to face. Through this challenge however, I have learnt that anything is possible if you believe in yourself. I am glad I did push myself to complete this course as I am very proud of the final product I created.
