My major textile project is a three piece dance costume, consisting of a corset, skirt and briefs intended to be worn and danced in in ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ by the lead character Satine as the sparkling diamond of the Moulin Rouge. The lustrous champagne gold silk dupion corset has a strapless sweetheart neckline, is fully lined, underlined and interfaced with boning, creating the desired corset style and a sparkling seamless appearance inside and out. The corset includes cups with underwire and casing completed with top stitching and cross hatching top stitches on the upper cups, adding intricate detail. The centre of the corset is creatively embellished with a heart motif made up of rose gold and crystal beading and, machine and hand cording in rose gold glamour thread, symbolising the Moulin Rouge and Satine as the sparkling diamond. The corset is completed with a back closure of metallic gold thread embroidered eyelets interlaced with champagne gold satin ribbon and bound on the upper and lower edges with champagne gold satin bias binding to create an aesthetically pleasing appearance. The multilayered skirt is constructed with gathered oyster tulle and rose gold metallic stretch fabric completed with a narrow double hem, and a pleated champagne organza layer sitting over the top completed with a Calvin Klein hem. These layers are secured with an interfaced champagne gold silk dupion waistband, and slide and bar closure with two press studs for a seamless appearance. The briefs are created using the same rose gold metallic stretch fabric as the skirt to blend in with the skirt. They are high waisted with a high leg cut, fully lined and completed with strong scalloped lingerie elastic and a serpentine top stitching. This project has pushed my boundaries and challenged both my creativity and textile abilities. I was challenged through my use of hard to sew fabrics for the construction of the skirt such as the tulle, metallic stretch and organza fabrics, creating and completing the overall beading design and, machine and hand cording hearts and swirls with difficult glamour thread that constantly separated into multiple strands. As well as the challenge of attaching the cups to the corset and completing the underwire casing. Despite these challenges, I am proud of the determination and persistence I have shown to overcome them and have thoroughly enjoyed the process to produce a project that I am beyond proud of.
