Description

My MTP is a costume for Katniss from the Hunger Games. It includes a corset with a laser-cut leather collar, triple-layered skirt and wings, and is made from Milano and pulse charmeuse satin, shot organza, liquid foile jersey and leather. The corset features chenilled pintucks, leather lacing with d-rings, pleating and ruching. The leather wings are detailed with laser cut and Angelina fibre feathers. The skirt is trimmed with bias binding, a marbled lining with flame-coloured hues and laser-cut and appliqued mockingjay symbols.

"Laser Cutting - I used the innovative manufacturing technique of laser cutting the leather used for the wing feathers, and corset collar as well as the Mockinjay symbols which I appliquéd on the skirt's lining. The repeated use of this technique created unity and balance across the design providing a slick, neat and sealed cut in the leather allowing for an aesthetically pleasing finish and contributing to the success of the overall project."

"Marbling was chosen to enhance my design by incorporating the creative surface decoration of marbling into the skirt and corset lining. This technique has allowed me to create a customized "flame-hued" fabric using various dyes, evocative colours and swirls of flames which catch the eye and contribute to the success of the overall project."
