Dissent

"My Major Textiles Project is a man’s suit jacket, a mini skirt, a bandeau, and a collar. The theme is power and position of women in society with inspiration sourced from Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Rei Kawakubo, kimonos and newspaper articles. My MTP is designed to blur the line between femininity & masculinity."

Images of Work

"The silk fabric of the lining was digitally printed using a Canon iPF6450 printer to reproduce a newspaper print showcasing various 'Women’s Rights' articles. The lapels of the jacket have been designed as panels that fold outward, exposing the newspaper print, and are sewn with a topstitch for definition. The lining has been backed with white fusible interfacing to ensure it appears opaque and paper-like."

"The waistband of the skirt has been hand embroidered with hundreds of red glass beads forming the word ‘DISSENT’ to emphasize a key theme. My MTP challenges the traditional conservative men’s suit by combining an androgynous shape with bold feminine design tweaks and colour contrast in the newsprint, beading, pleated sleeves and collar."

Select Student Folio Pages

The pages selected for each project reflect the individual students' interpretations of the syllabus guidelines for the MTP. Each student should develop their folio according to the guidelines, relating to their own individual project. This may result in a variety of presentation styles, numbers of sketches and/or experiments.
