Koyo: Autumnal Mercuriality

Northern Beaches Secondary College Manly Campus

Elle Fitzgerald

"My Major Textiles Project, 'Koyo: Autumnal Mercuriality', is a collection of Textile Art items fusing western regency with traditional Japanese design sensibilities. Inspired by the Japanese jūnihitoe; a Heian-period court costume whereby the more layers of fabric worn reflected the greater wealth of its wearer, I constructed not a sole garment but a collection of original layer-able pieces involving modular elements."

Images of Work

"Textured boro patchwork is found on the detatchable kimono sleeves adding sensory variety to the garment's handle as well as introducing a range of accent hues such as burnt caramel and ash browns which complement the autumn colour scheme. "

"The cream-coloured mesh, origami-folded bustle skirt is decorated with black free-motion machine stitched floral embroidery which is focused on the hem, then reaching up and following the folds of the garment in elegant tendrils."

Select Student Folio Pages

The pages selected for each project reflect the individual students' interpretations of the syllabus guidelines for the MTP. Each student should develop their folio according to the guidelines, relating to their own individual project. This may result in a variety of presentation styles, numbers of sketches and/or experiments.
