Description

'Sapphire Coat' is a form-fitting sueded knit coat with mandarin collar edged with brocade piping. The fully lined coat features hand-made gold corded frog closures down the centre front and cuffs. The collar and back panel feature free-motion embroidered fabric collage, edged in brocade piping which is also used in the coat’s front facing. The coat’s drafted curved back panels are inspired by the architecture of Zaha Hadid, especially the curved lines of his SOHO tower in Beijing. The coat’s silhouette references 1940’s wartime fashion and the Chinese Cheongsam dress. Another strong inspiration was the rich jewel tones and luxe gold embellishment of Alexander McQueen’s ‘Angels & Demons’ Autumn/Winter 2010 Collection.

"The use of hem tape to secure the seams helps the garment hold its streamlined appearance. This technique enhanced the appearance of the garment and elevated the quality of the finish beyond the limitations of the material."

"The fabric collage created for the back panel and the mandarin collar adds both visual and tactile textural elements to the design. This is achieved through the use of a variety of fabrics and fibres, including Angelina fibres."
