Description

This costume based project has been influenced by the American Civil War and makes a strong statement about slavery. The design has been adapted from historically accurate patterns and the overskirt has been self-drafted. The purple fabric/lace has been hand dyed. The taffeta bodice is lined and boned and features freehand machine embroidery and chiffon sleeves. The cotton lawn skirt has a placket opening, extensive gathered flounces and French seams have been used throughout. The taffeta lined overskirt features hand embroidered words associated with slavery, depicting the differing views of the North and South, reflecting the inspiration of textiles propaganda.

"By hand dyeing the purple fabric and lace I was able to keep the same colour throughout the different fabrics and notions. The purple colour also complemented the otherwise achromatic black and white design and added pops of colour throughout the pieces."

"The freehand machine embroidery adds subtle detail to the design. As it is stitched in metallic black thread that blends into the black fabric, the effect is subtle from afar. However, when looked at closely the detail can be seen and a subtle elegance enhances the overall design."
