Description

This costume has been inspired by the 1997 film Anastasia, which is a loose adaptation of the legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna and the double headed eagle a symbol of Russia’s power. Linda Cho a New York Costume Designer, was the leading costume designer for the Broadway production of “Anastasia” and elements of Cho’s designs for “Anastasia” are the inspiration for this garment. The bodice and over skirt are constructed using red duchess satin and then lined with a polyester lining fabric. A red cotton with a gold print, has been used to construct the unlined under skirt. The fully lined red satin and tulle ruffled bustle exaggerates the silhouette of the dress. Surface design includes Goldwork embroidery techniques and heavy beading, used to create the double headed eagle and gold foiling using vinyl, forms the basis of the decorative panels on the outer skirt. Machine couched chains of gold beads edge the foil on the skirt with red and gold beads, and droplets added for extra detail.

"In order to create the desired silhouette of the bustle skirt, I constructed many metres of tulle and satin ruffles and inserted them into the layer between the over and under skirts."

"The corset embellishment was created on a layer of crystal organza. Gold vinyl established the shape of the motif, to which gold thread work and intricate hand beading were added. Once completed, I cut around it with a soldering iron to seal the fabric edges, turned them under and hand stitched it into place."
