Japanese Inspired Wall Hanging

Willoughby Girls High School

Stephanie Basuki

"My Major Textiles Project is a Textile Art wall hanging that stylistically communicates a fusion of East and West design, inspired by traditional Japanese culture and Australian designer Akira Isogawa. My wall hanging features many creative and innovative techniques, such as chenille work, patchwork, bora patchwork, sashiko stitching, with laser cut fabric flowers, dyeing, embroidery, and smocking."

Images of Work

"The adaption of traditional techniques such as Indigo dyeing, Boro patchwork and sashiko stitching reflect current trends of tie dyeing and denim patchwork. These have been used to create the backing for the wall hanging, providing dimensional stability when displayed as well as demonstrating the cultural heritage of Japan."

"The use of laser cutting in the production of my crane silhouettes allowed for the stylised designs to be cut out very precisely and accurately. This allowed maximum impact of the contemporised aesthetic of the traditional Japanese crane symbol, inspired by Akira Isogawa."

Select Student Folio Pages

The pages selected for each project reflect the individual students' interpretations of the syllabus guidelines for the MTP. Each student should develop their folio according to the guidelines, relating to their own individual project. This may result in a variety of presentation styles, numbers of sketches and/or experiments.
